Why It Happens

Vaginal dysbiosis occurs when the healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina - normally dominated by Lactobacillus species - is disrupted. This can happen for a range of reasons. Antibiotics are a common trigger, as they can wipe out beneficial bacteria alongside harmful ones. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, or from hormonal contraception can all shift the vaginal environment. Other contributing factors include douching, scented intimate products, new or multiple sexual partners, high stress levels, and a diet high in sugar, which can encourage the overgrowth of harmful bacteria or yeast. When the protective Lactobacillus population declines, the vaginal pH rises, creating conditions where unwanted microorganisms can thrive.
